collections
The Virginia MOCA will host an upcoming show titled “Collector’s Edition”. Specifically, art collectors, the patrons who help support artists and the art they make. It is also a reference to collecting in general. People collect any and everything. Stamp collectors, rockhounds, and whatever you call someone who collects Beanie Babies. There is no end to the list of collections out there. I have a few myself. Always picking up things that catch my eye. A bit of rust, an insect wing, scraps of paper with lines drawn or printed. Pretty much anything that might be used in a future piece of art. I even have a handful of doll hands, broken from their owners’ plastic arms that I somehow continue to find despite having donated most of the Barbie collection my daughters used to enjoy. I do sometimes organize and purge but it’s hard. You never know when that thing you threw away would have fit perfect with the cabochon you just found hiding in the back of the drawer.

As part of MOCA’s upcoming exhibition they held an Open Call to locals. Create works of art based on collections. Happily, the due date coincided with the final days of my #100dayproject. It was a challenge to myself. 6 inches of copper wire, 10 minutes a day for 100 days. I had no expectations for myself other than to get in the studio and create. What began as a simple challenge resulted in a work of art that was at first surprising but also, once completed seemed obvious. Drawing was after all my first love but working with metal has become a passion. The “drawn” images using wire are a perfect marriage of both.

I’ll probably never stop scanning the ground for “treasures” to collect. And I’ll probably never use every bit of my collections in a piece of art. But these eyes and hands were not made for a minimalist lifestyle anyway. So I encourage you to start a collection of things that you are drawn to, spread them out in front of you and create your own “Collectors Edition” work of Art.
