new year, new images
As the world comes into bloom all around I can’t help but be excited for the coming months. We survived our least favorite time of year. Post holiday with its twinkling lights and baked goods. We have arrived in the season of new beginnings. There are lots of exciting things happening around the studio. I’ve been working in charcoal- drawing cranes, blending lots of paper pulp, and creating a new series of jewelry pieces. I have had to set limits for the time allowed in the garden with my hands in the dirt, attempting to bring new life into our yard.
One of these new projects was joining the Virginia Beach Arts Center in the Vibe district here in Virginia Beach. You can now shop my jewelry in person! The VBarts center has a great variety of Artists in residence as well as monthly shows that bring in art both locally and nationally. I will be adding new pieces monthly to the display so there is always something new to see. If you are in the area don’t to forget to visit the purple building on Virginia Beach Blvd.
I am also looking forward to teaching 3 camps this summer at Virginia MOCA, papermaking/book arts and drawing. I missed not having summer camps in our backyard last year as well as the creativity of my campers but I did not miss the unpredictable weather and massive daily cleanup. I have a lot of new projects planned for this summer and am excited to see just how the kids experience new methods of making art in a space dedicated for learning.

Last, but most importantly I have been working on a new collection of jewelry that is in conjunction with charcoal drawings. These images were born from a drive south last summer when I spied what seemed like a flock of whooping cranes in the marsh somewhere between Virginia and South Carolina. The image of these large white birds with black feathers on the tips of their wings congregating in the swamp stuck and has been inspiration for so many new pieces. Whooping cranes were once nearly extinct and are still endangered. I am almost certain what I saw was in fact a flock of whooping cranes but I am no expert and the scene passed so quickly it has become more of a mirage in my memory.
Four new pieces have been added to the website and more will be uploaded as I finish them. Instagram is a great way to see my progress. Follow along here… INSTAGRAM
A Partridge or the French translation une perdrix brass ornament. Handcrafted and designed in the studio, these ornaments are timeless and what I hope will become family heirlooms.
